View over to Ypres

View over to Ypres

The sun came out just at the right time to give a perfect view over the landscape to Ypres. I’m standing on Hill 62. Sanctuary Wood is down on my right where I visited the trenches on my last trip. Another emotive time. My song, Other Mothers’ Sons was played over the Remembrance weekend in some churches and on Radio Cornwall.

It was there that I was moved to write the words “Other mothers’ sons – I’ve seen their names as petals fell in tears of rain”. The song had its first airplay on Radio Cornwall today. I was inspired to write “Other Mothers’ Sons” after a trip to Flanders earlier this year. I was saddened by the extensive loss of life on all sides, and couldn’t help thinking of my own sons – that in another time I might have been reading their names on the white gravestones in the military cemeteries. The song takes us on a journey of sadness but moves through reconciliation, a prayer for peace and hope for the future.

My hope is that many people will download the MP3 from iTunes! You can watch the video on YouTube.

All the proceeds are going to Combat Stress and Surf Action They do an amazing job supporting military veterans. Check out their websites and see for yourselves.

Thanks to Greg Dyer (Light Circus) who put the video montage together using some of the photographs I took on my trip, and archive images of WW1 with kind permission: gwpda.org except first image – Jack Grainger, 2nd Lieutenant, killed in the battle of the Somme 1916, aged 19yrs.

Thanks to Sue Aston, Dare Mason and Greg Dyer for their skills and musicianship which have enhanced the emotion and mood created in the track.
